Karibu Youth Program
The Karibu Youth Program is a voluntary initiative designed to support young people aged 12-24 through two key focus areas:
- Youth Reintegration: Supporting young people as they reintegrate into the community after involvement with the justice system.
- Early Intervention: Providing targeted support for at-risk youth to address challenges early and prevent deeper involvement with the justice system.
The program focuses on providing intensive, individualised support to help participants live independently, make informed decisions, and build the skills necessary for a positive future. Young people enter the Youth Reintegration stream after successful completion of Kumbatia Youth Care while in detention and upon re-entry into the community. Those in the Early Intervention stream are referred through schools, community organizations, or families to receive preventative support.
Program Aims:
1. Youth Reintegration
- Support Independent Living: Equip participants reintegrating from detention with skills and resources to live independently and self-sufficiently.
- Promote Stability: Provide assistance in areas such as education, employment, and housing to help young people achieve stability post-incarceration.
- Reduce Recidivism: Offer continuous support to minimise the likelihood of reoffending.
2. Early Intervention
- Address Underlying Issues: Provide tailored support to address personal, family, or
social challenges that increase the risk of justice system involvement.
- Improve School Engagement: Work with schools to reduce absenteeism, improve
behaviour, and keep young people engaged in education.
- Encourage Positive Decision-Making: Help participants develop decision-making,
conflict resolution, and coping skills to avoid high-risk behaviours.
- Promote Community Connection: Foster positive relationships and social
engagement to strengthen protective factors.
Our Impact
- Faraja has already achieved significant success with this program. For instance, we supported five young boys who were showing early signs of antisocial behavior. Through six months of intensive support, these boys were kept away from gangs and criminal activities. Faraja funded after-school programs and activities to build routines and positive habits, while also working closely with their families to ensure a supportive home environment. These outcomes demonstrate the program’s effectiveness in preventing justice system involvement and promoting positive development.
